| Description |
Continuation of the project that commenced in 2006 to:
- Develop a network of indigenous ranger and similar organisations in the Torres Strait, Arnhem Land and the Gulf of Carpentaria with a common concern about the amount of marine wildlife, in particular turtles, becoming entangled in derelict fishing gear (ghost nets) in their sea country.
- Build the skills and knowledge of indigenous rangers and assist in the establishment of institutional frameworks for the continuous achievement of natural resource management in the region.
- The objectives of the project are to:
- Remove the nets from the coastline of the Gulf of Carpentaria
- Rescue any wildlife found entangled in nets
- Record information about the nets
- Raise awareness about the issue
- Research the abundance, distribution, movement and impacts of ghost nets.
