Description

Continuation of the project that commenced in 2006 to:

  • Develop a network of indigenous ranger and similar organisations in the Torres Strait, Arnhem Land and the Gulf of Carpentaria with a common concern about the amount of marine wildlife, in particular turtles, becoming entangled in derelict fishing gear (ghost nets) in their sea country.
  • Build the skills and knowledge of indigenous rangers and assist in the establishment of institutional frameworks for the continuous achievement of natural resource management in the region.
  •  The objectives of the project are to:
    • Remove the nets from the coastline of the Gulf of Carpentaria
    • Rescue any wildlife found entangled in nets
    • Record information about the nets
    • Raise awareness about the issue
    • Research the abundance, distribution, movement and impacts of ghost nets.
